Nuisance Muskrat Problems
In Michigan muskrats live in ponds, rivers, streams, and ponds. Muskrats generally eat vegetation like weeds and cattails. Sometimes they will even eat small fish and frogs.
Muskrats burrow into walls of ponds creating caving, sliding, and erosion. They also destroy vegetation in homeowners' ponds. We have found muskrats living in coy ponds eating fish and destroying pumps and heaters.
Muskrat Problem Solvers
Muskrats are easily trapped in colony traps or live traps on land. Green apples and birdseed often work the best to lure the muskrats into the traps.
How to Get Rid of Muskrats?
We once received a call from a homeowner with a single muskrat creating damage to their coy pond. The muskrat was eating the fish, eating the bird seed, and destroying the pond heater. We set a colony trap inside the pond and a live trap on land where the muskrat was eating the bird seed. We removed seeds from the bird feeder and filled the trap full of seeds and apples. Within one day the muskrat was in the trap.
- Reduce Attractants: Muskrats typically feast on vegetation, so they live in areas that are rich in these types of foods. If there isn't a food source for the muskrats, they may move on by themselves. Here are some plants muskrats like to chow on the arrowhead, pond weeds, cattail, sedges, ferns, water lilies, rushes, and willow. If you can remove these this may force them out.
- Identify Where they are Living: Muskrats cause great damage by, burrowing in river banks, retaining walls, and dams. By identifying areas such as muddy water, muskrat runs, muskrat burrows, mudslides, and food remains you will be on your way to a successful muskrat removal plan.
- Trapping: This is the best method for removal. The use of live traps, body grips, and colony traps is the best way to get rid of muskrats from your river, lake, stream, or pond. The best baits include birdseed and apples.
- Fencing: This is a more in-depth approach to keeping muskrats out. You will need 1" hardware cloth and need to dig down at least 3 feet underground to keep them from burrowing. This method is best used to keep muskrats out of ponds and other waterways.
How Much Does it Cost to Get Rid of Muskrats?
Muskrat trapping is the best and really the only method to get rid of them. We use colony traps allowing us to capture many muskrats at once. Charging for muskrat trapping is much like trapping raccoons, squirrels, or skunks. We charge a set-up fee/inspection to come out to your home to survey the property and strategically set traps. Depending on the location of your home you may expect to pay an inspection fee of $150-$200. Typically for muskrats, we charge a per-animal cost or we may charge a per-trip charge. Per animal, the cost could be anywhere from $100-$150 depending on the placement of the traps and the location of your property. Trip charges depend on the location of your property. This is the method we usually use for Muskrats. This cost is usually cheaper than the initial service call. For a free detailed quote click on the free price quote button.
