Nuisance Opossum Trapping
Nuisance Opossum Problems
In Michigan Opossums are the only marsupial, meaning they have a pouch that they carry their young. They have long prehensile tails which gives them another limb to use for hanging. Opossums are usually found under decks and in sheds. We sometimes find them in attics but that isn't generally the case here in Michigan. They need a decent size opening to enter the attic.
Opossums give off a strong odor and oftentimes find places like your garage or under your deck to die. No one likes the smell of a decaying animal. They also get into dog food and annoy homeowner's pets. Opossums aren't known for biting but will give off a hissing sound when close to them to make you aware of them. They will also "play opossum" if they feel threatened. Basically, they make themselves look dead and can give off the odor of a decaying animal because they know that most predators are not scavengers and will not go after bad meat.
Opossum Problem Solvers
Trap and relocate is the best method. We actually find these animals the easiest to trap because they will eat anything so it doesn't take a lot of effort to get these critters into the trap. Opossums are easy to trap, but you need a nuisance wildlife control permit in order to relocate them.
How to Get Rid of Opossums?
The only real way to remove opossums is by live trapping. When baiting for Opossums you can pretty much use any bait. They will eat anything. Opossums are scavengers and look for anything to eat.
- Inspect for an opossum entry point. Most of the time they are living under your deck, basement, or shed. It is possible for them to live in your attic, but generally, there needs to be a wide-open hole.
- Once you identify the entry point, set up live traps near the entry point. Remember you can use pretty much anything to bait with. Cat food works pretty well. When setting up traps try and place them in shaded areas. Opossums are nocturnal and do not do well in direct sunlight.
- You may actually be able to just remove the opossums by hand. Opossums generally "play possum" and won't try and attack you. This means they will play dead. Wear heave gloves, grab them by the tail, or scruff of their neck. A catch pole works well also. Rabies can occur in any wild animal, but with opossums it's unlikely. Their body temperature is too low for the rabies virus to survive.
- Sealing the entry points. After removal of the opossums, you need to seal the openings to prevent them from returning. This can be done with galvanized hardware cloth, screws, and solar seal.
How Much Does it Cost to Get Rid of Opossums?
Opossum trapping is the best and really the only method to get rid of them. Charging for opossum trapping is much like trapping raccoons, squirrels, or skunks. We charge a flat rate fee for the inspection and set up of traps. During the inspection, we come out to your home to survey the property and strategically set traps. Depending on the location of your home you may expect to pay an inspection and set up fee of $250. Typically for opossums, we charge a flat rate cost or we may charge a per-trip charge. Per animal, the cost could be anywhere from $60-$100 depending on the placement of the traps and the location of your property. Trip charges depend on the location of your property. A flat rate charge is the method we usually use for opossums. At an added cost once the opossums are trapped and removed we can also screen off decks or fill in holes to keep them from returning.
